To makeup 💄 or not 💋

juleswhitlock

Since I started this account, I am blown away by the quantity of makeup products out there.

It is not only overwhelming, but it can also become very costly.

Prices continue to rise (drugstore products included).

It’s definitely a balance and if you are like me, I am always looking for deals.

The beauty industry is massive and even the larger brands like L’Oréal  place their own sister brands in competition with one another.

Did you know L’Oréal owns 36 brands including NYX Cosmetics, Redken, Maybelline and many more.

While we may want it all, the reality is most of us can’t afford to keep buying new stuff regularly.

Some of you have asked me where to begin when it comes to buying makeup.

First of all, you need to feel comfortable in your own skin - so you do you.

Depending on your budget and what you are comfortable wearing, here is a bit of an overview.

Drugstore options today are fabulous and no one would ever know the difference!

If you are not a fan of wearing any makeup or very little - try out a new lipstick / lipgloss shade.

There are no hard rules about what to wear on your face when it comes to makeup. It just has to feel right for you.

If you do one thing, please protect your skin. Wear SPF every single day.

Play around and experiment with makeup. I have had many bad attempts at applying it over the years. I am no expert but playing around helps me to know what works.

Also, before applying makeup – make sure your face is well moisturized.

I like to even out my skin tone, so I use a colour corrector. I have dark circles under my eyes, so I tend to lean in to eye brighteners and concealers too.

The key is to go in with a light application. If you want more coverage, add thin layers until you are satisfied.

While everybody claims that their product does not cause creasing – we all know wrinkles cause creasing.

So make blending your friend! Just know that while your wrinkles may be somewhat camouflaged, they will never be elimanated.

A lot of people on social media platforms may use filters so you may not be seeing reality.

Also keep in mind that the shade one person has applied may look like a different shade on you.

Foundation, skin tints, BB & CC creams, etc. – please have someone help you with the match. Identify whether you want full coverage or a sheer tint.

Again, this may take a few tries to figure out but there are some great drugstore finds that are excellent if you don’t want to pay a luxury price.

While I love bronzer – think about the time of year and the right shade for the season.

For winter – use a lighter shade to add a more sunkissed look while during the summer months - use a richer shade to create a more tanned complexion appearance.

One of my most favourite products has to be blush. Oh mon dieu! So many textures, formulas, shades and finishes to choose from.

Just a little goes a long way and adds a healthy glow. So many to choose from so contact me if you want some guidance on that one!

For the eyes, there can be a lot of products to choose from so decide what ones you want to use.

From eyeliner, eyeshadows, eyelash curler, to eyebrow products, mascaras and waterline pencils – there is lots to consider.

You may want to start out by booking a professional appointment to help with shape. You can also think about a tint too.

Eyeshadow sticks are easy, simple and low maintenance. Maybelline has some new ones out that are so beautiful. So many great shades too!

If you choose to wear eyeshadow, try some neutral tones and bring up YouTube to learn a simple application.

The eyeliner is also a personal preference as well as how you want to wear it.

For someone with less experience, you may find smudging it out helps! Find ones with the smudging applicator included (L’Oréal has a great one).

By smudging, you avoid one harsh line across the lash line.

Brown eyeliner is softer than a stark black one and looks good on every eye colour.

There are so many different types of eyelashes out there so base your mascara purchases on the end result you want for your look.

Are you aiming for more volume, length, separation, thickness, waterproof, or long-lasting? Read the descriptions on the packaging so you get what you need.

When it comes to your lips, most women always lean towards one type.

I tend to gravitate towards the lip gloss. As much as I love a good lipstick, I feel better when my lips are glossier. But I also need a 12-step program about my lip product purchases!!! 🤣

Drugstore products have such good options now and they are really good quality. You don’t have to go luxury on lip items but if a luxury one is what your heart desires – SPLURGE!

Lipliners are good in theory but after that initial application, I never tend to go back and touch it up or apply again.

If you do use a lipliner, always use a sharp pencil when applying. Warm it between your index finger and thumb for a few seconds. By softening it a bit, you will get a smoother application.

As you can see, I can ramble on for hours about makeup! I love it and I believe it’s a very creative way to express yourself.

I hope you can enjoy the creative side of it and have fun with it.

Anything I missed that you are curious about – please reach out and ask me!

Happy to help wherever I can.

Whatever you do – keep being you – because you are so awesome!
